The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday demanded that the UPA government resign immediately, in the wake of the Comptroller and Auditor-General’s report that it had caused a loss of Rs.1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer through non-transparent allocation of coal blocks.
“The government, which is already mired in a series of scams, has lost the moral authority to continue in power after the latest scam that has been exposed by the CAG,” Rajya Sabha MP M. Venkaiah Naidu told journalists here.
He accused the UPA of pushing the country into a situation where corruption and looting of the nation’s wealth had become unparalleled.
“Corruption, anarchy and price rise have reached their peak. It is unfortunate that the UPA is protecting looters and cheats rather than punishing them,” he alleged.
He said “corruption, lack of leadership and policy paralysis” were the three main reasons for the present condition of the country.
Mr. Naidu demanded that the Prime Minister and his colleagues immediately resign paving the way for fresh elections to the Lok Sabha. “The earlier the UPA government goes, the better for the people of the country,” he remarked while alleging that the “UPA government is becoming unpopular every single day and people are sad and angry with it.”
He said the Congress as well as the UPA would be routed in the next elections and the BJP-led NDA would come to power. “The BJP will emerge as the single largest party in the next Lok Sabha elections.”
Privilege motion
Taking serious exception to the Congress leaders launching a counter attack against a constitutionally appointed body like the CAG, for exposing the alleged irregularities, instead of trying to rectify their mistakes, he said the Opposition parties were considering moving a privilege motion when Parliament reassembles on Tuesday.
“We are concerned at the Prime Minister’s silence on the attack against the CAG and we are determined to take the government to task.”
Mr. Naidu alleged that the UPA did not know how to run a coalition government and the country’s federal structure was getting weakened. He said the country was facing a crisis in a series of sectors for the first time after Independence and blamed it on the ‘apathy’ of the UPA.
