The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday decided to extend the deadline for funded institutions to get themselves assessed and accredited as per the UGC (Mandatory Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2012.

According to the Regulations – notified in January this year and effective from the date of notification – UGC funding would be given to only those institutions which have undergone the assessment and accreditation process as prescribed.

Now, the UGC has decided to give universities and institutions more time to fall in line; provided they apply to the recognised Accreditation Agency by June 1, 2014. If they fail to do so, this could lead to the discontinuation of financial assistance by UGC from the 2015 fiscal.
