Two months on, flood-hit migrate to safer, dry areas

Authorities have failed to provide food and fodder, they complain

August 19, 2013 11:41 pm | Updated 11:41 pm IST - HARIDWAR:

Rows of bullock carts and tractor-trolleys laden with household goods can be seen moving out of flood-ravaged Gangdaspur and neighbouring villages as residents migrate to dry areas to beat starvation and waterlogging that has hit them for nearly two months now.

About 300 such families have migrated out of the waterlogged villages over the past week, Surender Saini a farmer of Jogawala, said.

Sore at the authorities failing to provide food and fodder, villagers prefer to eke out a living as daily wage workers than face starvation, illness and death in these forgotten villages.

“Gangdaspur is submerged under two feet of water for nearly two months now,” said Shamsher Singh, adding that he hoped to feed his family of seven by doing some daily wage work in nearby villages.

Similarly, villagers of Dallewala, Naiwala, Jogawala and Chandrapuri complained that the authorities had not provided them food and fodder despite repeated reminders.
