Dr. Subramanian Swamy, president of the Janata Party, writes:
The Nobel Laureate Professor Paul Anthony Samuelson, a Ph.D. from Harvard and Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who died on Sunday at the age of 94 at Belmont, Massachusetts, will go down in history as the greatest analytical economist the world has known. He used mathematical methods with such felicity that it was second nature to him. And because of that he transformed economics for it to become accepted as a science, and thus be included among the Nobel Prize awards in 1969. He received his Nobel Prize in 1970.
I was privileged to be his student, and later co-authored and published research on the Theory of Index Numbers. I had the pleasure of his company and his friendship during the last 45 years. During the Emergency, he wrote a column in Newsweek supporting our anti-Emergency activities and encouraged us all a great deal. I shall miss his presence and the cheer he brought to all of us.
