The Uttar Pradesh police arrested three activists of the Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV), an organisation formed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on charges of gang rape and beating a police officer in Bareilly, on Tuesday.

According to Superintendent of Police, Bareily city, Rohit Singh Sajwan, the HYV activists were arrested on the complaint of a woman, a resident of the Ganeshnagar area.

Barged into house

According to her complaint, the HYV activists allegedly fought with a member of her family and later barged inside a house and misbehaved with her and assaulted her.

This comes few weeks after the activists of the Hindutva outfit were accused of lynching Ghulam Ahmed, a resident of Bulandshahr, for allegedly helping an inter-religious couple to elope.

According to the police, those arrested include Bareilly division president of HYV Jitendra Sharma, city unit chief of the outfit Pankaj and another HYV activist.

The police said that when other HYV activists got to know about the arrests of their leaders, they barged inside the police station and tried to attack police personnel there.

“For now three persons have been arrested. Two FIRs were filed, one by sub-inspector Mayank Arora who was allegedly attacked by the HYV leaders and another by a woman who was assaulted by them. The investigation is on,” Mr. Sajwan said.
