‘Towering’ problem for power utility company

Installation of electric towers progressing at a snail’s pace

April 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - KHAMMAM:

The ambitious project of the Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TSNPDCL) to install as many as fourteen tall electric towers (M+6 towers), which will be around 16.5 metre high, in some select flood-prone areas in Bhadrachalam division is going on at a snail’s pace.

The project is aimed at replacing the old PSCC poles (9.1 meters) with the tall electric towers (16.5 meters) in the vicinity of the flood-prone habitations situated along the Godavari river course in Wajedu, Venkatapuram and Charla mandals.

The project was conceived to prevent the persistent problem of disruption in power supply to hundreds of villages situated along the river course during floods.

It was initiated as part of a slew of initiatives aimed at strengthening the distribution and transmission network in the tribal sub-plan mandals of Bhadrachalam Agency.

Power supply to little over 500 villages in both Bhadrachalam and Palvancha divisions gets disconnected once the Godavari crosses the danger mark of 53 feet at Bhadrachalam.

The initiative assumes paramount significance in the backdrop of the recurring interruptions in power supply in the areas prone to flooding in Bhadrachalam division.

However, the TSNPDCL could complete only six tall electric towers of the total 14 towers sanctioned under the Centre sponsored Integrated Action Plan for Left-wing extremism affected areas in Bhadrachalam division so far, sources said.

The project is being implemented on a fast-track mode to complete the remaining eight towers (M+6 towers) in a fortnight well ahead of the next monsoon season, said Pratap Reddy, Divisional Engineer, TSNPDCL, Bhadrachalam.
