Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes) Swati Lakra and Rio Olympics silver medallist P.V. Sindhu were conferred the Shreyasi Award by St. Ann’s College for Women at its Mehdipatnam campus on Wednesday. Instituted to mark the International Women’s Day by Dhruti, the college’s Centre for Women’s Studies (CWS), an alumnus receives the honour each year – Sindhu this time – besides another woman for her distinguished services to the society.

“Acclaim her for the work of her hands and let her deeds praise her at the city gates,” read out a student, quoting Proverbs 31: 31 at the start of the programme.

“The award is meant to honour women of substance, their achievement and of whom stories are told,” said Sr. Amrutha, the principal.

“Women ignite a spirit of hope,” said Popy Devi Nath, director, CWS. “You are incredible in your own way,” she added, while pointing out that March 8 was a reminder of the discrimination against women. ‘Pressforprogress’ ran the theme, illustrated on the stage’s backdrop by a closed fist, symbolising the intent.

A role model

The IPS officer, while accepting the citation, said she was honoured to receive the award and showered Sindhu with praise. “The college cannot get a more deserving role model,” she said while expressing admiration for Sindhu’s parents, the ace shuttler’s Arjuna awardee father P.V. Ramana being present on the occasion. “Whatever you do, give it your everything,” she urged the students.

Vimala Reddy, who heads the department of physical education, read out a long list of the institution’s most illustrious students’ achievements. “Sindhu spent seven years in this college, right after school, till she finished her MBA,” she said.

Working hard

Sindhu, while admitting she wasn’t regular to college, thanked the faculty profusely for going the extra mile to ensure she didn’t lag behind in studies. “I believe we women are strong enough and we can achieve anything if we work hard,” said the Rio Olympics silver medallist.

The awardees then feted students for their achievements from State to national levels.

The loudest cheers were reserved for Dr. Vimala’s announcement: for 10 years in a row, St. Ann’s College, Mehdipatnam, is the winner of Osmania University’s overall championship.

After the function, accompanied by Dr. Vimala and Suma Reddy, convenor, Press and Media, Sindhu visited the college’s sports room and addressed media persons assembled there.
