A distraught woman whose son had committed suicide for the cause of separate Telangana over four years ago, allegedly attempted suicide by consuming pesticide at the Police Parade Grounds here soon after the conclusion of the Telangana Formation Day celebrations on Thursday.
The police identified the woman as R. Sugunamma (55), mother of Telangana martyr R. Sudhakar Reddy, of Repala village in Nalgonda district. Sudhakar Reddy, who worked as Panchayat Secretary in Nalgonda district, ended his life by consuming pesticide in Mudigonda mandal on February 1 in 2012 when the statehood movement was at its peak.
The State government had disbursed Rs. 10 lakh financial aid to Sudhakar Reddy’s wife Shakunthala, a government teacher, in 2015.
Sugunamma reportedly tried to convince her daughter-in-law, who was already employed, to allow her unemployed younger son (brother of Sudhakar Reddy) get the job offered by the government to the martyr’s family, but in vain.
Her daughter-in-law reportedly insisted that she would wait for a few more years till her minor son attained the prescribed age to take up the government job allotted to their family, sources said. Left to fend for herself after the death of her elder son Sudhakar Reddy, Sugunamma reportedly apprised the officials concerned of her pathetic financial condition during the State Formation Day celebrations on Thursday morning.
A little later, she allegedly attempted suicide by drinking the poisonous substance, which she carried to the venue in a syrup bottle. She was rushed to the district headquarters hospital. Her condition was stated to be critical.
