Marking International Women’s Day, members of the Vanitha Abudya Sangham – an organisation started by the Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) at Garudadri Nagar three months ago – have resolved to donate a bag of rice a month to old-age homes and orphanages, besides clothes, fruits and others every month.

Pitchamma, who runs an old-age home under Santhi Mahila Mandali in the town, was presented a bag of rice in a brief ceremony on Sunday.

Sangham president P. Pushpalatha said its members had decided to enrol for the tailoring course that was being offered by NYK since many of them were unemployed. Fifteen women had completed the free course on Sunday, she said, adding that they had also decided to involve themselves in various other activities.

Members of the organisation also encouraged people of Garudadri Nagar to open bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana. They also participated in the Swachh Bharat campaign to maintain cleanliness in the colony premises.

“We would also encourage people to donate used clothes and excess food cooked during special functions,” said G. Sunitha, secretary of the association.
