Buoyed over the Supreme Court directions banning the sale of liquor within 500 meters of the highways, the residents of various localities have also registered objections against the setting up of liquor shops, permit rooms and bars in residential areas in various parts of Karimnagar district.

The residents, mostly women, of the Housing board in the 21st municipal division in Karimnagar town, have staged a protest dharna opposing the opening of liquor outlet along with permit room in their locality. Similarly, the residents of Teegalaguttapalli have opposed the liquor shop near the Manikeshwar temple and near a junior college on the outskirts of the Karimnagar town.

The residents of Housing board stated that they were already suffering with the bar in their vicinity, the allotment of liquor shop along with permit room for consuming liquor would lead to serious inconvenience to the women passers-by.

On the other hand, the residents and devotees of Manikeshwar temple on the outskirts of Karimnagar town near Teegalaguttapalli have also submitted a petition to the Prohibition and Excise department officials to relocate the liquor shop between the temple and junior college. The petitioners said that the location of liquor shop near a place of worship and educational institution was against the norms. Incidentally, the residents, who remained silent over the location of liquor outlets during the earlier licence period, are now stiffly opposing the liquor outlets in the residential areas.

The Prohibition and Excise department officials said that they had so far received 30 complaints from the residents of various parts of the integrated Karimnagar district urging for the relocation of the liquor shops and permit rooms from the residential areas.
