‘Remote sensing technology can aid development’

The data can be used for tourism development and to identify waste land

November 02, 2014 03:23 am | Updated 03:23 am IST - SANGAREDDY:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated the process of using remote sensing technology to boost the economy. Mr. Modi, as Chief Minister of Gujarat, used the technology to aid the economic development of the State and he plans to replicate the same at the national level

As part of the initiative, all the line departments were directed to hold a meeting with senior officials of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) on how best they could use technology to assess the implementation of various projects and schemes. The meeting may take place in the next week.

The data supplied by remote sensing centres can be used in the implementation of projects, establishment of industries based on the information about resources, crop pattern, identifying waste land and water bodies.

Disclosing these details during a talk about Bhuvan, Gateway to Indian Earth Observation Data Products and Services, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH), on Saturday, Saindranath Jonna, Project Manager, VRC, Societal Services, NRSC, said that the data supplied by the agency could be used for various purposes like tourism development, improving water bodies, identifying crop pattern, forest development and implementation of irrigation projects. “With the help of satellite images and data, we can plan and implement our projects,” he told a gathering of students participating in the ‘nVision – 2014’programme held at IITH. He said that this would reduce the cost and time of physical survey that needed to be done using huge manpower.

Arun Raj, another official from NRSA, said that they were able to supply the required data within 12 hours for the Andhra Pradesh government to take up rescue and rehabilitation operations after Cyclone Hudhud hit the coastal area. He also said that State-level remote sensing centres would be established for seven north-eastern States during the next week.
