A high-level meeting chaired by Collector K. Ilambarithi has come up with several immediate steps and lasting remedial measures to prevent road accidents in the district. The meeting was held at the Collectorate here on Friday. It deliberated on various factors responsible for road accidents and the preventive measures needed for halting the road mishaps.
According to official sources, the meeting discussed about 26 most accident-prone areas identified on the main roads in various parts of the district.
The officials concerned told the meeting that as many as 70 road accidents occurred on Kothagudem and Yellendu road, 62 road mishaps on KCM Petrol Bunk-Palvancha main road, 44 instances of road accidents at Nav Bharath turning point near Palvancha and others in the district last year.
The Collector has asked the officials to organise field visits to the accident-prone spots by joint teams consisting of officials belonging to the Roads & Buildings, Transport and Police Departments besides, the RTC as well as the local body elected representatives.
He wanted them to submit detailed study reports suggesting remedial steps within one month, sources added.
After an elaborate discussion on the issue, the meeting has recommended immediate measures like installation of traffic signboards and erection of warning boards at all the accident-prone areas besides, permanent steps like widening of roads and removing obstructions if any on the main roads.
Streamlining traffic system
The meeting also dwelt at length on streamlining the traffic system in Khammam, strict enforcement of traffic rules and implementation of road safety norms.
Superintendent of Police Shahnawaz Qasim, RTC Regional Manager Ch. Ajay Kumar, the officials of the R&B, Transport and other departments were present.
