The State Government had initiated the process for recruitment of 190 field officers, field assistants and other posts in the Fisheries department as part of efforts to ensure that the department could reach out to the fishermen community more effectively.

Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav said the Government had allocated ₹1,000 crore for integrated fisheries development project and the new recruitment comes as part of the project. Steps had already been initiated for construction of wholesale and retail fish markets to enable marketing facilities for the fishermen community. The Minister was speaking at a meeting organised here in connection with the World Fisheries Day on Tuesday.

He said there were 2.82 lakh registered members in 3,954 fishermen’s cooperative societies in the erstwhile 10 districts and efforts are on to constitute societies for districts after reorganisation of the State. Members belonging to the community should enrol themselves into these societies to avail the benefits under the different schemes launched by the government, including the huge subsidy that is being provided in purchase of fishing boats and other equipment.

The department is planning to notify elections for the old societies as well as the new ones that would be constituted soon and fishermen’s federation and other bodies should take the initiative in ensuring that all the community members are registered as members in these societies, he said.
