Proper quality control during the construction stage of infrastructure will avoid huge expenses in its maintenance, professor in Department of Civil Engineering in Indian Institute of Science J. M. Chandra Kishen said.
Delivering a guest lecture on ‘Healthy monitoring of structures’ at the Hyderabad campus of GITAM University here on Friday, he pointed out that most of the Central and State government budget allocations are spent on maintenance rather than development due to poor quality constructions.
He explained the best practices in healthy monitoring of structures. He shared his experiences in studies of Indian Railway bridges. Various bridges constructed decades ago were analyzed and studied in load carrying capacity, he added.
Head of Department of Civil Engineering in GITAM University B. S. R. K. Prasad said that quality construction will not increase the cost of the structure. Utilisation of materials in appropriate technical manner and adopting good practices will increase the durability of the structure.
