Taking cue from his meeting with former IAS officer from Karnataka K. Amaranarayana, Police Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu had one lakh seed bombs prepared with the help of trainee personnel.
It may be noted that Mr. Amaranarayana made a presentation on the seed ball or seed bomb concept and how they converted denuded hillocks into thick jungles over the years in Karnataka.
The Commissioner swung into action and involved trainee Constables at the Madikonda Police Training College in making one lakh seed balls — mixing clay, water, cow urine, and seeds into a ball. When dropped into dry plain areas ahead of the monsoon, they come into contact with water and seeds start germinating.
Plantation drive
This was part of the third phase of the Haritha Haram programme.
Inaugurating the programme, Officer on Special Duty at CMO Priyanka Varghese lauded the initiative of the police. “About 24% of the State is hilly, which can be converted into a green spaces with these seed balls,” she said.
Ms. Varghese wanted the district administration and NGOs to ensure that each household plants a tree in the ensuing phase of the programme.
Collector K. Amrapali and Ms. Varghese rolled several seed balls to motivate others to do the same.
Mr. Babu said they were happy to replicate the programme taken up in Karnataka. “We want to see more rains in Telangana, which can happen by planting more trees. I urge everyone to join hands in the noble mission,” he said.
Chief conservator of forests M.J. Akbar and DFO Bheema Naik were also present.
