April 20, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - Nizamabad:

People belonging to different walks of life under the aegis of the Telangana Joint Action Committee district unit voluntarily worked for Mission Kakatiya by removing silt at the Oora Cheruvu (village tank) at Kalur in this mandal on Sunday.

Earlier, Telangana JAC district chairman I. Gopal Sarma formally launched the works by breaking ground on the tank bed. JAC conveners V. Prabhakar, Gaini Gangaram and treasurer Bhaskar, senior authorities of Irrigation and other departments, all-party cadres and women in large numbers participated in the programme.

Appeal to ryots

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sarma appealed farmers to use the soil removed from the tank bed in their fields as it is very fertile and helps improve crop yield.

He also asked the authorities not to allow contractors and others to shift the soil to their real estate ventures and civil works.

Referring to an incident where soil from a tank at Kesapur village was taken to another village by a realtor to fill pits and level ground in his venture, he asked the authorities to check such developments in the execution of Mission Kakatiya.

Dharna staged

The JAC activists staged a dharna at the village protesting against the shifting of soil by contractors.
