Scores of students from various educational institutions made a beeline to the Public Gardens to have a glimpse of different kinds of weapons and get a little familiarised with the dogs that help in crime detection.
The Open House organised by the city police as part of the Police Martyrs’ Week drew huge crowds here on Sunday where the department had put up for display weapons, bomb disposal equipment, finger printing equipment and communication gadgets.
P. Tejaswini, a class 8 student, said she and her friends were excited to see and touch the weapons used by the police. “This is a rare opportunity for us to know a little more about police and their duties,” she said. Launching the Open House, City Police Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu said police personnel on duty sacrifice a lot and at times, their own lives, protecting the life and property of citizens. It was their sacrifice that kept the society protected, he added.
Unlike in the past, the role of police has increased in the society. Besides their regular duties such as crime detection and patrolling, they were into social activities as well. “The police owned the duty of creating awareness among people about social evils like superstitions and practices like black magic. We have exclusive cultural troupes that go around the interior villages conducting awareness programmes. The police also conduct programmes aimed at helping the educated unemployed youth and misguided youth, particularly in Agency areas,” he explained.
2k run
Meanwhile in Mahabubabad district headquarters, a 2k run was organised by the Police Department from NTR Stadium to the government hospital. SP N. Koti Reddy, MLA B. Shankar Naik, Joint Collector K. Damodar Reddy and students from different schools and colleges took part in the run.
