No specific documents required for visitor’s visa

March 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST

My children, who are less than 14 years old, and I applied for visitor visas. We were rejected under 214(b). My husband is currently in the U.S. on a professional assignment and will stay there for a month. We wanted to join him for a couple of weeks during our kids’ summer break. Can we know the reasons why our applications were rejected? Can we reapply? Do we have to pay a visa processing fee again? What other documents do I need to bring with me next time in order to prove our case?

There are no specific documents required for a visitor’s visa – except a valid passport and the visa application. Every applicant must qualify for a visitor’s visa on his/her own merits. Interviewing officers rely on statements made by the applicant to determine visa eligibility, although they may consult supporting documents such as affidavits of support, travel arrangements, employment letters or financial statements to verify statements made in the interview. Individuals whose non-immigrant visa applications were refused are eligible to reapply. We do not recommend that applicants reapply unless they are able to present significant new evidence that addresses the previous grounds for refusal.

I was interviewed for a visa at the Hyderabad Consulate in February. My visa application was initially approved by the officer but later denied within five minutes. The reason given by the office was that my brother was standing next to me in the queue and that we did not attend the interview together. My friend, an American citizen, is sponsoring my visit. If my visa can be approved and then rejected within a span of five minutes, how can I know whether it will be approved again?

We understand that it is disappointing to get refused. The Consular Officer who refused your visa is trained to evaluate all aspects of your case, such as your financial and family situation in India and many other factors. The officer asked the appropriate questions to obtain the relevant information, weighed your answers with the other facts of your case, and made a decision based on that information. Individuals whose non-immigrant visa applications were refused are eligible to reapply.

I have my DS-160 confirmation. To pay the required application fee of $160 at Axis Bank, I was told that the bank needs an additional code. How can I get this additional code to make the payment?
