The State government has maintained that there was no proposal to enhance the retirement age of government employees from 58 to 60 years.
Finance Minister Eatala Rajender told the Assembly on Thursday that there were 4,15,931 employees, including work-charged, contingent, Grant-in-Aid, contract and those working on honorarium, against 5,23,675 sanctioned posts. He was replying to a question by Arekapudi Gandhi (Serilingampally) and T. Prakash Goud (Rajendranagar).
“Every year, 8,000 to 10,000 employees retire and there are 1,07,744 vacancies. We are awaiting the Centre’s decision and particularly the report of the Kamalanathan Committee. Once the nod comes, we will start the recruitment,” he informed.
Meanwhile, the Telangana Employees Confederation chairman Erva Venkatesham submitted a representation to the government pointing out that the retirement age for Central government employees was 60 years.
Mr. Venkatesham said that 25 of 29 States had opted for 60 years as the retirement age in view of significant improvement in the average life span expectancy.
