An investigation into the complaint of an a attempt to extort money from a person resulted in the killing of renegade naxalite Nayeemuddin alias Nayeem, said the police.

The Mahbubnagar police received a complaint from a person — the husband of a ZPTC member from Nizamabad district — stating that he was receiving threat calls. "The complainant whose name I cannot reveal at this stage said that some persons were demanding Rs. one crore related to a land dealing," Mahbubnagar SP Rema Rajeshwari told The Hindu .

Based on the information given by the complainant, police began tracking the gang. They got an alert that the callers were moving in a particular car. "Our teams identified the vehicle on Monday morning and spotted it near a house at Millennium township on Shadnagar outskirts," she said.

On seeing the approaching police party, one of the persons travelling in the car opened fire at the police. "Even as we returned fire, one person carrying a firearm got out of the vehicle and ran away. Another person too tried to flee but collapsed after we opened fire," the SP said.

Later, police identified him as Nayeem. An AK-47 assault rifle and a pistol were recovered from the spot. Police recorded 'Panchanama' from witnesses. Local Revenue officials too arrived at the spot. After recording the statements of the witnesses, the body would be sent to Government hospital for performing autopsy.
