Mild tension near Collectorate

CPI stages dharna demanding suitable compensation to land oustees of Gouravelli and Gandepalli projects in the district

Mild tension prevailed in front of the Collectorate in the town on Monday following CPI activists staging a massive dharna and rasta roko demanding suitable compensation to land oustees of Gouravelli and Gandepalli projects in the district.

The CPI activists led by former legislator Gunda Mallesh, CPI district secretary K. Ramgopal Reddy and others participated in the dharna along with the land oustees of the two irrigation projects proposed as part of the SRSP flood flow canal in Husnabad region.

Sensing trouble, the police forcibly closed hotels and shops opposite the Collectorate.

When the protesters tried to barge into the Collectorate premises by climbing over the main gate, tension build up between CPI activists and police. In the melee, several protesters sustained injuries. When the situation was getting out of control, the police arrested some protesters.

Irked over this, other CPI activists also staged a dharna and rasta roko at the bus station causing traffic snarls. However, the police shifted them immediately.
