Indian scientists excelled in the field of nuclear science, and despite challenges they could complete the nuclear power plant at Kovvada in Andhra Pradesh, said ECIL chairman P. Sudhakar.
Explaining the challenges faced by scientists in establishment of nuclear power plants, he said all the instruments are incubated and manufactured indigenously at the ECIL.
He was speaking at the seminar - Nuclear technology: a long term vision for India - at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here on Monday. It was organised in association with the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) as part of its diamond jubilee year of establishment. The seminar was aimed at creating awareness among the students and general public on nuclear technology, nuclear power and BARC technologies.
The programme was led by BARC, Mumbai, with support from Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), Hyderabad; Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL), Kovvada Site, and Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. (ECIL), Hyderabad.
NIT director Prof. T. Srinivasa Rao highlighted the importance of nuclear energy in view of quick consumption of fossil fuels. He thanked the BARC team for coming over to NIT Warangal to make the public aware of importance of nuclear power.
The seminar was addressed by eminent scientists from ECIL, NPCIL and BARC.
A short skit titled, ‘Kum main hai dum’ and audio-visual presentation by BARC dispelled the various misconceptions about nuclear power generation and highlighted the various aspects of nuclear power generation as an environment-friendly source.
More than 300 under-graduate and post-graduate students and research scholars from NIT Warangal and schoolchildren from more than 15 schools in and around Warangal, participated in the programme.
The exhibition on BARC Technologies comprised of poster gallery, interactive models like dummy assemblies of actual nuclear fuel and components, reactor model, LCD displays, information kiosks and audio visual presentations depicting applications of atomic energy.
