In a move to raise awareness on biodiversity among schoolchildren, the National Green Corps and TS Pollution Control Board, in collaboration with Jawahar Bal Bhavan, conducted painting competitions on the eve of International Day of Biological Diversity on Sunday.
The theme this year was ‘biodiversity and sustainable tourism.’ Around 150 students from 25 different public and private schools participated in the competition to show their support to the protection of environment.
“The main idea is to develop an interest in biodiversity,” project officer T. Radhika said. “The event focuses on how interdependent we are with our surroundings.”
Ms. Radhika said she was hopeful that these children would be agents of change in our society.
The students set off to task by painting their ideas to fruition and helping each other throughout the process.
“Nature is our most important asset. Through my painting, I want to show how we can protect it by planting more trees and reducing pollution levels in the city,” said Jhanavi, a student of Holy Mary School.
She appealed to the citizens to “plant more trees, save our nature and save our future.”
