The Zilla Parishad general body meeting held here on Saturday passed a unanimous resolution seeking the establishment of an integrated steel factory in the mineral rich Bayyaram mandal in the district.

Earlier, Bayyaram MLA G. Ilaiah raised the issue expressing serious concern over the alleged delay on the part of the government in taking steps in this direction.

He noted that the AP State Reorganisation Act, 2014, contained a specific provision in this regard.

The six months time-frame for completion of the feasibility study for establishment of the steel plant under the aegis of the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) as envisaged by the Act, expired several months ago, he pointed out.

He alleged that attempts were being made to underestimate the extent of iron ore deposits in Bayyaram mandal in a bid to prevent public sector steel plant in the mandal and allow private companies to take up iron ore mining.

Mr. Ilaiah demanded that the Central government ensure the setting up of a steel plant under the public sector in Bayyaram as per the Act, at the earliest.

The ZPTCs of the opposition parties sought concrete steps to prevent spread of fever and seasonal ailments in the district.

Some of the agitated members alleged that the Medical and Health Department was trying to downplay the gravity of vector borne diseases in the Agency areas.

The ZPTC members of the Left parties displayed placards demanding reinstatement of the contract municipal workers who were suspended during the recent strike in Kothagudem and Palvancha municipalities.

They wanted the government to redress the grievances of ASHA workers.

Zilla Parishad chairperson G. Kavitha presided over the meeting.

Khammam MP P. Srinivas Reddy, Collector D.S. Lokesh Kumar, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer M. Nagesh and others were present.
