High prevalence of diabetes in Karimnagar

February 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - KARIMNAGAR:

Every seventh person is suffering from diabetes and every tenth person from hypertension in the district.

These startling revelations were released by the Apollo Reach Hospital in the town, which had conducted several medical camps in various parts of the district since last one-and-a-half years. The hospital had conducted more than 110 medical camps throughout the district and had screened more than 50,000 patients.

The doctors, who had screened patients at various camps, observed that high incidence of diabetes and hypertension was found among those in the age group of 30 to 40 years in the district. They attributed this to lifestyle changes owing to stress and lack of physical exercise.

During a medical camp conducted for police officials, of the 550 persons screened, 27 were found suffering from hyper-tension and 22 had diabetes while five persons had both BP and diabetes.

Similarly, the doctors had screened 600 government employees at the Collectorate and found that 58 persons were suffering from diabetes and 30 had hypertension and another 15 had both BP and diabetes.

The incidence of diabetes is high among government employees due to lack of physical exercise, whereas, the incidence of diabetes is low among police personnel, the survey says.

Apollo Reach Hospital Superintendent Anamalla Naresh said they have found that cases of high BP and diabetes were increasing among youngsters owing to changing lifestyle and stress. “Earlier, cases of diabetes and high BP were rear in rural areas,” he added.
