Farmers staring at a bleak future

Water level depleting in Taliperu

Farmers in the ayacut areas of Taliperu medium irrigation project in Charla mandal are staring at bleak prospects for their standing crops due to the fast dwindling water level in the Taliperu reservoir.

The water level in the reservoir at Peddamidisileru plummeted to 69 feet as against the full reservoir level of 74 feet. The ayacutdars of the project, mainly Adivasi farmers, are worried over the fate of their standing chilli, paddy, and other crops due to the precarious water level in the reservoir.

The irrigation project situated in the tribal heartland of Charla mandal bordering Chhattisgarh is the lifeline of tribal farmers of the Agency mandals of Charla and Dummugudem in Bhadrachalam division.

No maintenance

The Taliperu project has an ayacut area of 24,000 acres under its left and right canal spread in the two tribal sub-plan mandals. However, the inordinate delay in execution of modernisation of the project and lack of proper maintenance of the canal system has become a major impediment in realising the full potential of the medium irrigation project.
