Differences crop up among IMA members

Many oppose the IMA’s announcement of sudden closure of private hospitals without any prior notice

Differences have cropped up among the doctors of Indian Medical Association (IMA) over the announcement of sudden closure of private hospitals without any prior notice to people in the district.

It may be recalled that IMA chapters of Jagtial, Korutla and Metpally had announced closure of hospitals from Thursday protesting against the arrest of two surgeons – T. Suresh Kumar and Manoj Kumar.

Following this, the IMA Karimnagar chapter and others in the district also announced closure of their hospitals from Saturday onwards without any prior notice.

A majority of doctors have opposed the move as it causes inconvenience to patients in peak summer.

Also, the decision was taken without seeking the opinion of senior doctors in the district. The IMA should have convened a general body meeting before going on a flash strike, some doctors opined.

Some other doctors said that the IMA was not a trade union to go on strike and support the tainted doctors who brought disrepute to the profession with their unethical practices.

IMA national political liaison committee chairman E. Vijayender Reddy said “the flash strike is not the solution and it’s not correct too”.

The decision to go on strike would send a wrong message to the society, he opined.
