Commotion broke out at a meeting convened by All India Congress Committee secretary R.C. Khuntia here on Tuesday when a group of tribals staged a protest demonstration demanding expulsion of Rajya Sabha member Renuka Chowdary from the party.
The meeting held at Sanjeeva Reddy Bhavan at District Congress Committee Office here to review the party membership drive was disrupted for sometime by a group of tribal people from Wyra Constituency.
The protestors led by B. Kalavathi, wife of late Ramji Naik of the town, barged into the meeting hall.
They displayed placards and shouted slogans demanding action against Ms. Renuka charging the latter with duping Ramji Naik to the tune of Rs. 1.10 crore on the false promise of securing him the party ticket from Wyra Constituency in the last general elections.
The protestors alleged that Ramji Naik died of brain haemorrhage due to mental trauma last year. Chaos prevailed for sometime as a section of the Congress cadres objected to the disruption of the meeting by the protesters.
The senior Congress leaders had a tough time in controlling the situation. The meeting resumed after the police rushed to the venue and brought the situation under control.
