Congress criticises PR Act amendments

To conduct meetings across the State to raise awareness

January 22, 2018 11:10 pm | Updated 11:10 pm IST - WARANGAL URBAN DISTRICT

The proposed amendment to the Panchayat Raj Act reveals the power hungry nature of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, alleged District Congress Committee (DCC) president N. Rajender Reddy.

By amending the law and then calling for local body elections, the TRS government wants to test itself before the full scale campaign for the general elections, he said.

“The attitude of the government and the Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is anti-democractic. It encourages horse-trading among village level leaders, making a mockery of democracy,” Mr. Rajender Reddy opined.

Accusing the Chief Minister of disrespecting the sarpanches, the Congress leader said that sarpanches did not want elections six months before the end of their term.

The elections should be conducted in July, as the tenure ends on August 1, he said.

‘No funds’

He said that the Chief Minister had not released funds for schemes such as ‘Mana Vooru, Mana Pranalika’ and ‘Grama Jyothi’, even though they were launched in a grand manner.

“TRS’s four year rule has rendered local corporations defunct and irrelevant. The elected representatives neither have anything to do nor were given any funds,” he said.

He said that to bring about a change in the State, the Congress party intends to conduct an awareness.

“We will conduct meetings in the villages and give representations to the village secretaries on January 23. On January 27, we will conduct programs in constituency centres and give representation to the revenue officials and on January 30, we will give representation to the District Collectors,” Mr. Rajender Reddy said.
