A tunnel-shaped structure dating back to the British era was unearthed by labourers digging for laying pipelines for Mission Bhagiratha project in Yellandu on Sunday.

Sources said a group of labourers noticed a trench while digging the earth to lay pipelines under the drinking water project near Buggavagu in the coal town, considered the birthplace of Singareni Collieries Company Limited. The tunnel-like structure is believed to have been constructed during the British rule as part of a ventilation system in coal mines.

Several local residents, including some SCCL employees, thronged the site to catch a glimpse of it.
