There was mild tension near Langar Houz in Hyderabad on Wednesday when a large crowd of BJP workers tried to surge towards Golconda Fort, a kilometre away, to hoist the national flag on the occasion of Hyderabad Liberation Day.

A scuffle ensued between the crowd and the police until it was forcibly cleared. The police arrested BJP Secunderabad MP Dattatreya, MLAs G. Kishan Reddy, K. Laxman, Raja Singh and Ch. Ramachandra Reddy and a number of other workers to pave way for traffic which went haywire at the fly over nearby.

All parties with the exception of YSR Congress and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen observed functions on Wednesday to commemorate the merger of erstwhile Hyderabad State with the Indian Union in 1948.

The YSR Congress, which was opposed to the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh three months ago and MIM, a votary of Nizam's rule prior to 1948 for obvious reasons, did not observe the day.

The ruling TRS, Congress, Telugu Desam, BJP, CPI and CPI (M) hoisted national flag in their respective party offices. The BJP even planned to observe the occasion at the hitoric Golconda fort which was constructed by the Kakatiya dynasty and later fortified by the Qutb Shahis in sixteenth century. But, the police rounded up the BJP activists as the Archaeological Survey of India which looked after the fort denied permission. However, the BJP cadre participated in flag hoisting at the party office and some junctions in the city.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu participated in the function at the DP office and Telangana Home Minister N. Narasimha Reddy at the Telangana Bhavan of TRS.

Freedom fighter Dodda Narayana hoisted the national flag at Makhdoom Bhavan, the CPI headquarters. The party also organised cultural programmes and a meeting at Ravi Narayan Reddy auditorium. Surprisingly, the CPI (M) which was also opposed to bifurcation organised a separate function at Sundaraiah Vignana Kendram. Recently, the CPI (M) supported the TRS in the by-election to Medak Parliamentary constituency.
