An ancient construction, probably of Asafjahi period, was unearthed during demolition of old police barracks at Begum Bazar on Saturday.

Quoting local residents, police officers said the structure might have been used as an armoury by the then rulers. Several such structures were unearthed in the past whenever old buildings were demolished in Begum Bazar, Goshamahal and adjacent areas.

The police housing corporation has taken up demolition of dilapidated barracks and three residential blocks at the site for construction of a new police station of Shahinayatgunj on 2,500 sq yds on the main road from Goshamahal to Begum Bazar.
