The police have booked cases against 28 students who went on a rampage on the Kakatiya University campus on Friday.

Cases under sections IPC 148, 342, 352, 353, 448 and 427 read with 149 have been registered against them and they would be produced in court soon, said Circle Inspector Mr. Devender Reddy.

Meanwhile, an unusual silence prevailed on the campus as the authorities closed down all hostels, suspended classwork and postponed all the examinations indefinitely.

Senior employees of the university said that the management should do away with the privatization of hostel mess as that has been leading to frequent disturbance on the campus for the past two years. They also sought eviction of all non-boarders as they drained away the limited resources meant for hostelers.

A group of students went on a demolition spree on Friday as they failed to get food at the mess. The authorities lodged case against them and closed hostels.

The KU has been functioning without a regular vice chancellor since May last year. All key posts are being managed by persons appointed as in-charges.
