The Delhi High Court on Friday granted bail to Lt. Gen. (Retired) Tejinder Singh, who was arrested earlier this week in a case related to his alleged offer of Rs.14 crore bribe to the then Army Chief Gen. V. K. Singh in 2010 for clearing a file for procurement of Tatra trucks.

Justice Pratibha Rani of the High Court released Lt. Gen. Singh on bail on his furnishing personal bond of Rs.1 lakh with one surety of the like amount. The Court said the retired Army officer would not leave the country without the trial court´s permission and would not contact any of the witnesses in the case during the trial.

The Court ruled that the reasons recorded by the trial court while dismissing Lt. Gen. Singh´s bail application were against the settled principles laid down by the High Court and the Supreme Court.

"I am of the view that the petitioner deserves to be enlarged on bail," the Judge said in her 19-page order while referring to the arguments of the counsel representing Lt. Gen. Singh and the CBI. The Court did not accept CBI´s argument that the accused was likely to influence the witnesses.
