Youths who harassed women at match held

The Periamet Police on Sunday arrested two youths on the charge of harassing women during the ISL match between North East United Football Club (NEUFC) and Chennaiyin FC.

The police had filed a case against them after a complaint was registered by Krishnadeep Menon, Chief Executive Officer (Grass Roots) of Chennaiyin FC.

S. Rajendran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kilpauk), said the S. Vijay alias Tamizh Selvan, 18, and Karthik Kumar, 20, have been arrested in connection with incident at the match, the video of which had gone viral.

The main accused, Vijay, a resident of Shastri Nagar on Perambur Barracks Road, was a school dropout and had come to the match with his friend Karthik Kumar who got complimentary tickets. Kumar is a resident of Nehru Jothi Nagar, Ayanavaram.

Both were picked up from their houses based on the video footage, Mr. Rajendran said.

They were arrested under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

Punishment for harassment is imprisonment up to three years with a fine not less than ₹10,000.
