Tension prevailed at Kallidaikurichi for a while on Wednesday after a youth, picked up for interrogation, died in police custody at the police station.

Sources in police said M. Murugan alias ‘Mottainaakku’ Murugan (37) of Veyilumuththammanpatti under Vickramasingapuram police station limits, was picked up by the police during a vehicle check on Tuesday evening. He was wanted in connection with 14 burglaries and chain-snatching cases, the police said.

As he reportedly confessed to the police that he was involved in some cases in the Ambasamudram and Cheranmahadevi areas, he was taken to the police station for further investigation.

“Murugan was facing 11 cases of robberies and burglaries in Ambasamudram and three cases at Vickramasingapuram police stations. Moreover, he was facing two ‘ganja cases’ filed by the Ambasamudram police,” the sources said.

When he was kept at the Kallidaikurichi police station, he reportedly developed chest pain at night and was rushed to the Ambasamudram Government Hospital. However, he died on the way.

As the news about the death of Murugan spread, tension gripped Kallidaikurichi. Besides deploying additional police force, Superintendent of Police V. Vikraman visited the spot immediately.

The body was taken to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem.
