Youth climbs up rock, threatens suicide

Demanding that the ban on jallikattu be revoked, a youth climbed up a rock near Arthanareeswarar Temple in Tiruchengodu and threatened to commit suicide here on Tuesday.

At 12 p.m., devotees found the youth on top of a rock on the hilltop.

He demanded revoking of the ban on jallikattu and also old-age-pension assistance for all persons who have crossed 70.

He said that he would commit suicide if the demands were not met. Tiruchengodu Revenue Divisional Officer G. Mahatma, Town police Inspector Kulasekaran and fire and rescue service personnel held talks with him.

He was identified as M. Dinesh (25), an engineering graduate of Puliyampatti village in the area. But he refused to come down till late in the evening.

Dangerous zone

The rock is located near Uchipillaiyar temple on the hilltop and is a dangerous zone. Efforts were to on pacify him.
