Woman killed in accident

July 20, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

A woman employee of a local television channel was crushed to death in a road accident at Murugankurichi in Palayamkottai on Tuesday.

Police said Gunasekaran of Kottur Road in Palayamkottai was taking his wife Amalitta (45) to her office on Tuesday morning on a two-wheeler. When he reached CSI Cathedral at Murugankurichi, the bike got suddenly stuck in the sand accumulated on the busy Thiruvananthapuram High Road.

Mr. Gunasekaran lost balance and even before he could control the two-wheeler, Amalitta fell on the road only to be crushed by a speeding unidentified vehicle that was following the bike closely. She was killed on the spot. The vehicle that caused the accident fled the spot before Mr. Gunasekaran could take a look at the registration number.

Tirunelveli City Traffic Investigation Wing sent the body to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

Sand on road

The police said lack of periodic removal of sand getting heaped on the road during this windy season was the prime reason for accidents of this kind.

“The Department of Highways, in association with Tirunelveli Corporation, should at least take steps now to remove the sand getting heaped on the roads periodically,” said a police officer, who arrived at the spot immediately after the accident.
