Woman hacked to death for opposing illicit sand mining

Daughter petitions Collector to book murder case against miners

May 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:59 am IST - Tirunelveli:

Seeking action against sand mafia members who hacked her mother to death, a woman from Vickramasingapuram submitted petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday.

In her petition, V. Jothi said the sand miners, led by one John Joseph of North Agastihyapuram under Vickramasingapuram police station limits, ransacked her house on January 14 after her father Murugan informed the police about illegal sand quarrying at Vadamalaisamudhram by the mafia.

When Ms. Jothi filed a complaint with the Vickramasingapuram police, accusing six persons of being involved in the attack on her house, only three of them were arrested.

Condemning it, Ms. Jothi submitted a petition to the Collector on January 19, but the police refused to arrest the ‘main accused’ of this case, who again orchestrated an attack on March 30 in which Ms. Jothi’s father Murugan, 65, and mother Savithri, 60 were hacked.

“While my father’s left hand was cut, the attackers hacked my mother on her legs. After being admitted to Ambasamudram Government Hospital, she was shifted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where her leg was amputated. After being under treatment for more than a month, my mother died on Sunday night. Hence, I’ve submitted a petition to the Collector again seeking registration of murder case against the sand miners,” said Ms. Jothi.

Opposition to well

A group of small and marginal farmers from Puliyangudi submitted a petition against the proposal to dig a well inside Achchenthi irrigation tank to supply drinking water to Vasudevanallur.

They said storage of water in Achchenthi tank, which was nourishing 300 acres of land, would be seriously affected if the well was dug.

“Instead of digging the well inside the tank, the officials may scout for alternative sites so that the livelihood of over 500 small and marginal farmers will be protected,” said P. Chelladurai, one of the petitioners.

Bad roads

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam’s Tirunelveli East district secretary K. Jayabalan, in his petition, said the roads connecting the district headquarters with Tenkasi, Papanasam and Sankarankovil had been in a very bad shape for the past several months causing accidents every day.

Similarly the stretch between Nanguneri and Thisaiyanvilai and the road traversing Thisaiyanvilai were also in the bad shape, he added.
