Woman dies after

illegal abortion

Illegal abortion claimed the life of a 35-year-old woman in Kalambur police station limits in Tiruvannamalai on Sunday. The police have arrested a quack for performing the illegal abortion.

The police said Sumathi, a resident of Mattu Street in Kalambur, had approached Jayalakshmi, 40, a resident of Kaliamman Kovil Street, Kasthampadi, for abortion. She was about three or four months pregnant. She was reportedly deserted by her husband.

The police said the quack used a stick from crown flower plant for uterous contraction. This caused severe septicaemia and Sumathi died,” he said.

The police arrested Jayalakshmi based on a complaint from Sugumar, village administrative officer of Kasthampadi. A case has been registered under section 316 (causing death of quick unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide) and 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Indian Penal Code.
