Welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils is our priority: Manmohan

India has conveyed to Sri Lanka the need for taking forward dialogue with the political representatives of the Sri Lankan Tamils on devolution of power, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.

In a letter DMK president M. Karunanidhi, the Prime Minister reiterated the since the end of the conflict in Sri Lanka, the focus of the Indian government had been on the welfare and well-being of the Tamil citizens.

On August 20, Mr. Karunanidhi wrote to Prime Minister on seeking India’s intervention to secure the rights for Sri Lankan Tamils. Dr. Singh had said that he had taken note of the issues raised by him.

“Their resettlement and rehabilitation have been the highest and the most important priority for our government. We remain engaged with the Sri Lankan government for the achievement of a future for the Tamil community that is marked by equality, dignity, justice and self-respect,” Mr. Manmohan Singh said in his letter to Mr. Karunanidhi on September 25.
