Water was released from Bhavani Sagar Dam into the Lower Bhavani Project canal on Saturday for special wettings of even turn ayacut area of 1.03 lakh acres.

State Environment Minister Thoppu N.D. Venkatachalam took part in a function at the Dam to initiate the first of the six cycles of special wetting until April 30.

Water flow

There will be 66 water flow days in the main and branch canals. At the time of release, a flow of 500 cusecs was recorded into the canal.

The discharge will gradually be increased to 2,300 cusecs from the Dam that now has a depth of 82.31 feet with storage of 16.94 tmcft.

A press release issued by the district administration said sufficient stocks of fertilisers and pesticides have been maintained by Agriculture Department.

Tirupur Member of Parliament V. Sathyabama, MLAs R. Kittusamy (Modakurichi), P.L. Sundaram (Bhavani Sagar), N.S.N. Natarajan (Kangayam), District Panchayat Chairperson S.R. Selvam, and senior officials of Public Works Department took part in the function.
