Walkers say ‘no’ to construction on land abutting Sankey Tank

May 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - Bengaluru:

The Sankey Park Walkers’ Association and other activists have opposed construction on the forest land abutting the Sankey Tank area.

The association staged a protest in the park on Sunday demanding that the State government take immediate steps to retrieve the land from a developer, who is proposing to build a large residential complex here.

Private firm

The land, 1.1 acres abutting Sankey Tank, was transferred to private firm, Mysore Industrial and Testing Laboratory (MITL), which is now amalgamated with Gulf Oil Corporation Ltd. The firm sold the land to Mantri Developers. The government’s attempt to retrieve the land has faced obstacles from the High Court.

“Sankey Tank has been one of the very few well-maintained lakes in the city.

An apartment complex in the vicinity will deplete the water in the lake, reduce the water table of the neighbourhood and affect the nesting and resting places of animals and birds,” said Sreenivas G., a member of the association.

“Most apartments that have come up abutting lakes have proved to be lethal as most of them let untreated sewage in to the lakes.

We will not let Sankey Tank go down the same road,” said another resident of Malleswaram.
