Waiting time to come down at Cancer Institute

An internet-based system helps doctors access patient details from anywhere at any time

April 29, 2012 01:53 am | Updated 01:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

Henceforth, patients visiting Cancer Institute, Adyar, may not have to wait for hours for their annual checkup, thanks to the electronic hospital management system the institute has installed.

The system has been put in place by Tata Consultancy Services as part of its corporate social responsibility project.

It started in 2009 and on Saturday, the entire system was in place, said N. Chandrasekaran, chief executive officer, TCS. According to him, the system, which included 30,000 new registrations and 90,000 doctor consultations, was unique for the institute.

Titled TCS Med Mantra, is an internet-based hospital management system, using TCS' cloud computing platform. Thus, a patient's details can be accessed any time, anywhere by doctors and the treatment regimen decided.

“The system will improve patient satisfaction. It reduces the time for patients when they come to the hospital. We have been using the manual system of entering data and billing procedures. This causes delays for the patients,” said V. Shanta, chairman of Cancer Institute.

The institute is also looking to improve access to patient data for research. Institute's additional director A. Vasanthan said: “We will have a wealth of information which we will be able to analyse. It will help us understand the disease patterns and patient profile.”
