V.O. Chidambaranar Port here surpassed the previous fiscal’s traffic of 32.41 million tonnes on Thursday (February 18).
According to a statement, this feat was achieved 42 days ahead of the fiscal-end. The port had maintained an impressive cargo growth at 17.18 percent. Major cargoes that contributed to the achievement were thermal Coal (15.29 per cent growth), containers (9.54 per cent growth), industrial coal (9.21 percent growth) and fertilizers (11.78 per cent growth).
Copper concentrate, rock phosphate, construction materials and lime stone had also contributed significantly in achieving this record, said S. Anantha Chandra Bose, port Chairman.
Port users, vessel operators, container terminal operators, officials and employees contributed to the achievement, he said expressed hope to achieve the Shipping Ministry’s cargo traffic target of 36.80 million tonnes for 2015-16.
