VOC Port achieves record handling of cargo traffic

V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust handled a record cargo traffic of 32.35 lakh tonnes during February 2015, surpassing the previous achievement of 28.53 lakh tonnes handled during March in 2014, which was the highest ever tonnage handled at this Port in a single month so far.

According to a statement from the VOC Port Trust on Friday, the Port also crossed the previous year’s traffic of 286.42 lakh tonnes on February 27, thirty two days ahead of the current financial year by handling 288.49 lakh tonnes. Major cargoes that contributed to the achievement were coal, pet coke, copper concentrate, rock phosphate, construction material, containerised cargoes, oil cake copra, naptha, furnace oil, liquid ammonia and caustic soda lye. Besides, the Port also crossed the previous year’s (2013-14) container traffic volume of 5, 07,735 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) on March 3, 2015 by handling 5, 08,678 TEUs of container traffic. The Ministry's has set a cargo traffic target of 32 million tonnes and container traffic of 5.48 lakh TEUs for 2014-15.
