Senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader S Vedantham on Monday decried the opposition from political parties in Tamil Nadu to ‘Sanskrit Week’ celebrations >proposed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in its schools across the country next month.
“It is cheap politics that is behind the opposition to an ancient Indian language which is indeed the divine language,” he told reporters here replying to a question.
Talking after offering worship at the famous Kamakshi Amman temple here, he pointed to chanting of mantras in Sanskrit at an ongoing “homam” and said it was a divine language.
Earlier, he called on the Sankaracharyas of the Sankara mutt here.
Various parties, including ruling AIADMK and BJP’s allies MDMK and PMK, have opposed the proposed “Sanskrit Week” celebrations slated to be held from August 7, with >Chief Minister Jayalalithaa saying it would be appropriate to have organised Classical Language Week i n each state based on its linguistic heritage.
