Sathish Sivalingam, a weightlifter from Vellore, struck gold yet again. This time at the Commonwealth weightlifting championships that is under way at Gold Coast in Australia. Three years ago, the 25-year-old bagged the gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow.

Happy family

“Sathish called me at 5 p.m. to inform me that he has won gold in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in the 77 kg category. He, along with his team members, reached Australia last month,” said his father Sivalingam, a resident of Sathuvachari that is home to several weightlifters.

Sathish had finished 11th in the Rio Olympics last year. “We were expecting him to do well in the Commonwealth championships as that would mean that he qualifies for next year’s Commonwealth Games. Now, by winning gold, he has made it to the games,” he added.

“This victory has made us very happy and more proud of him,” said Mr. Sivalingam, who is a security staff at VIT University.

“I am feeling very proud. This is my fourth gold in commonwealth championship. I will do more weights in commonwealth games. I am aiming for Asian games too,” Mr. Sathish said in a message.
