Expressing shock over the Madras High Court’s decision to dismiss a plea filed by the DMK seeking the disqualification of 11 MLAs including Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan on Saturday alleged that political influence seemed to have played a role in the verdict.

“Besides, a case concerning the disqualification of 18 MLAs is still pending before the court, and it [the verdict] raises questions about the court’s stand on this case,” Mr. Thirumavalavan told reporters at the Thoothukudi airport.

The VCK leader also demanded that the government closed down the Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi.
