Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko visited Unnamalaikkadai village on Friday to inquire about the chronology of events leading to the death of Gandhian and anti-liquor crusader Sasi Perumal, ahead of his appearance in the Madras High Court on August 31.

Mr. Vaiko visited the residence of Sasi Perumal’s friend Sasidharan in Unnamalaikkadai where the deceased had breakfast on July 31 before climbing up the mobile tower along with panchayat president R. Jayaseelan. Sasi Perumal, who undertook the protest demanding total prohibition, fainted atop the tower and died on the way to the hospital.

Mr. Vaiko also visited a government school and a church and made inquiries in the neighbourhood near the mobile tower about the happenings on July 31. Addressing reporters, Mr. Vaiko said that he came to take note of the chronology of events ahead of Sasi Perumal’s death to be produced before the Madras High Court, as he had impleaded himself in the case filed by Sasi Perumal’s son Vivek against the government.

Mr. Vaiko reiterated that official apathy claimed the life of Sasi Perumal. His life could have been saved if the officials had persuaded him to climb down.
